Kattenburg Competition – 1st Round
Founded in 2017 in memory of Claire and Willy Kattenburg, a Dutch philanthropic couple who passed away in Lausanne in 2012, this opera singing competition carries on their love of the arts. Deeply attached to the capital of Vaud, these patrons had inherited a passion for music from Willy’s mother, née Tauber, who had introduced him to singing in his native Vienna. Today, their legacy lives on through the Kattenburg Foundation, which sponsors the competition.
Following four previous editions that have showcased the exceptional talents of HEMU candidates – particularly during the final with an orchestra on the stage of the Lausanne Opera – the 2026 edition is broadening its scope. From now on, all students and graduates of Master’s programmes in singing at Swiss conservatoires will be eligible to take part. The semi-finals will take place at the BCV Concert Hall, and the grand final, which will be broadcast on RTS Espace 2, will be held at the Lausanne Opera House.
